Dodge, Mary Mapes Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates

Hardcover, 352 pages, 5 B&W plates incl. frontispiece and color paste-on on front cover by Bridgeman. More than 100 editions of this book were pubished before Dodge's death in 1905. This edition hasa two-page "A Letter from Holland" dated 1873 written by the author and located between the Preface and the Table of Contents. In 1873, Dodge became the editor of St. Nicholas magazine for children. Except for some light smudging on the first few pages, signs of erasure on ffep and 2 flattened creases at the bottom of the front free endpaper, the inside is clean and has no foxing; pages lightly age-toned. The covers are a blue-green cloth; the front has yellow and black decorations around the color plate, which is lightly rubbed and chipped around the edges and the front panel has very light soiling and several shallow indentations. The back cover is moderately soiled. The spine is darkened (but quite readable), is chipped appx. 1/8" at top, and the spine bottom. tips and outside hinges are lightly rubbed and worn through. Dodge, Mary Mapes St. Nicholas: An Illustrated Magazine for Young Folks - 1891
New York Century 1891 Hardcover Good+
Hardcover w/decorative embossed & gilt cover, 968 pages; this is volume XVIII Part II, May 1891 to October, 1891. The endpapers have some foxing, and several pages have light fingerprint soiling in the margins. Both hinges are cracked and weak, but holding. Red cloth is soiled all over and edges are rubbed, particularly at the corners & spine ends where binder's board is showing through. The spine is discolored and a bit faded but decoration is still easily visible. The cover is embossed with black and gold and is for the most part bright and quite attractive. Overall G++.
