1 Dickens, Charles "Boz" Our Mutual Friend with Forty-two Illustrations
Philadelphia T. B. Peterson & Brothers 1856 First Thus Hardcover Very Good Illustrated by Stone, Marcus
Hardcover, 350 pages plus frontis engraving of Dickens and montage title page with numerous illustrations from the book in addition to the 42 illustrations as called for. Type is set in two-column format, pages are numerically sequenced and each of the four chapters begins on a new page altho there are no other signs of these divisions such as illustrated pages indicating new chapters. The text pages are lightly foxed throughout and the front free endpaper and title page have tears toward the inside binding. The page block has long ago been a bit smushed at top corners and altho now flattened still shows light wrinkling. The original free endpaper has two very faded pencil gift inscriptions dated 1866 and 1881. The book has been REBOUND with attractive brown buckram and has a gold title on the spine. This book would be a great candidate for a professional rebinding in leather or decorated boards echoing the book's Victorian sensibilities. In the meantime, the buckram binding will safeguard the book for many future readings.
