1 Root, Frank A.; And William Elsey Connelley The Overland Stage to California: Personal Reminiscences and Authentic History of the Great Overland Stage Line and Pony Expressfrom the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean
Topeka, KS Privately Published 1901 First Edition Hardcover VG
Hardcover with tan gilt-stamped pictorial covers, 630 pages with fold-out map at back, photos and illustrations. Frank Root became messenger for the Overland Stage Line in 1863. His career as a messenger encompassed 32 trips between the Missouri and the Rockies, and riding a distance of over 22,500 miles. He was encouraged years later to write out his reminiscences and put them into book form, which resulted in this book, which remains one of the best histories on stagecoaching in the west. Clean inside, no owner underlining, etc. On inside cover first owner wrote: "This book was purchased by Richard T. Durrell on account of the Overland Trail passing through Beattie in Pioneer days...Huston Durrell." Top edge tinted tan, bottom edge a bit soiled. Front cover bright and clean; front cover is sunned, but still readable, and has rubbing to spine ends and tips. Folded map has been mis-folded resulting in several "extra" vertical folds. Overall VG or better condition. (no dust jacket) Howes R434
